Harambee! Summer
Read Aloud Readers Needed
Almost 1,000 children in grades K-8 from Charlotte's most challenged and fragile neighborhoods need you to read to them this summer! Our scholars enjoy daily stories during *Harambee from members of our great Charlotte community who share a love of reading.
Our children, under the leadership of the Freedom School Partners staff and college interns, embark on an experience that broadens their world, enlarges their dreams and keeps them safe during the potentially dangerous, often unsupervised long days of summer and after school hours.
You Can Help!
WHO: Role models who love to read aloud to children, who demonstrate the diversity of our Charlotte community and want to encourage a love of reading.
WHAT: Participate in *Harambee by volunteering 30 minutes of your time one morning during the summer to come and read aloud to 50-60 scholars ranging in ages from 5 - 14 years old. Tell them about yourself and your role in the community, answer some questions and read aloud a book we will provide for you or you can bring your own.
* Harambee is a Kiswahili saying that means "Let's Pull Together" - a pep rally that begins the day.
WHY: To introduce our scholars to a variety of role models in our community and to demonstrate that reading is important to everyone!
WHERE: Summer locations are Avondale Presbyterian Church, Billingsville Elementary, Christ Lutheran Church, CN Jenkins Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church, Highland Renaissance Academy, Johnson C.
