Freedom School Afterschool

Freedom School Afterschool Programs start with school dismissal and run until 6:00pm each day that school is in session. Scholars participate in a consistent daily schedule that includes a healthy snack, homework support, The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® integrated reading curriculum, and enrichment opportunities. Freedom School Partners evaluates programs for academic impact and quality programming; regular participation is required for scholars.

Freedom School Partners operates three afterschool programs for the 2011-2012 school year at:

Freedom School Partners afterschool programs include the following key components:

Literacy-based curriculum
Reading is a cornerstone of the afterschool program. Scholars participate in an integrated reading curriculum (IRC) that inspires a love of reading and builds self-esteem. Through IRC and homework help, scholars receive the academic support needed to supplement school-day learning.

College scholars as role models
With a strict 1:10 staff to scholar ratio, college role models develop positive relationships with youth through The Freedom School Way; creating a physically and emotionally safe environment while encouraging scholars to achieve their highest potential.

Parent and family engagement
Parents “pay tuition” for this free program through participation in monthly parent meetings and volunteer opportunities. Parental involvement provides critical support to the scholars’ educational success.

Year-round commitment to youth
Each scholar in the afterschool program has first right of refusal to participate in a summer The CDF Freedom Schools program. This ensures year-round support is provided to address the academic and social needs of the scholar.

Community partnerships
Freedom School Partners meets the individual needs of youth by collaborating with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, nonprofits, faith groups, and community volunteers to provide funding, volunteers and resources.

Community stewardship
Scholars learn about their role in their neighborhood, city and world through engagement in Harambee!, curriculum weekly themes, and Social Action projects.
