Children's Defense Fund's Freedom Schools® Summer Program

The Children's Defense Fund selected Freedom School Partners to host a CDF Freedom Schools summer program beginning in 2004. Offering fifteen programs in Charlotte, FSP has a bold vision of reaching 5,000 students by 2016. Freedom Schools is a literacy-rich program integrating reading, conflict resolution and social action in an activity-based curriculum that promotes social, cultural, and historical awareness. Programs run for six to seven weeks during the summer months from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Children's Defense Fund's Freedom Schools® Afterschool Program

Since 2000, FSP has operated an afterschool program to serve youth in the Seigle Avenue/Belmont neighborhood. For the 2010-2011 school year, FSP opened two additional afterschool sites at Sedgefield and Billingsville Elementary Schools to serve youth every day that school is in session. Freedom School Afterschool Programs start with school dismissal and run until 6:00pm each day that school is in session. Scholars participate in a consistent daily schedule that includes a healthy snack, homework support, a reading curriculum, and enrichment opportunities. Relationship to the Children's Defense Fund

Since 2004, FSP has worked in partenrship with the Children's Defense Fund as a sponsoring organization of Freedom Schools. CDF recognizes FSP as a national leader in delivering CDF Freedom Schools programs.
